Highlights from #EAST2015 - Guidelines for Management of Rectal Trauma

Dr. Bosage and his sub-committee presented guidelines for management of Penetrating Rectal Trauma.

Their conclusions are:

In patients with nondestructive penetrating extraperitoneal rectal injuries:

Proximal diversion (vs. non-diversion) is conditionally recommended to decrease the risk of infectious complications.

Presacral drainage is conditionally NOT recomended as it does not decrease the risk of infectious complications.

Likewise, distal rectal washout is conditionally NOT recommended.
