1. The Trauma Service has block time for elective cases *every Thursday
starting at 8:30am*.
2. *On Tuesdays after morning report, there is Pre-Op Conference* in which the cases
for that coming Thursday are discussed and decided upon.
3. The Surgery Senior on call on that coming Thursday is responsible for
preparing cases to present at Pre-Op Conference. They are also responsible
for booking those cases with Mary (OR scheduler 4-2132) by 9am that
Wednesday.
4. The pre-call Surgery Senior will cover the elective cases until the
on-call Surgery Senior is done with rounds.
5. The Frontroom Surgery Junior on call on Thursday is responsible (with
assistance from the Surgical Senior and Attending) for making sure the
patient is properly prepared for surgery, i.e. consent, type & screen,
imaging, bowel prep, pre-op note, etc.
6. There should be a medical student scrubbed into each elective case. It
is the very basic expectation that the student knows what procedure is being
done and has read about that procedure. Ideally, the student will know the patient's history as well.
7. Students who are on call on Thursday should plan to do at least one case. If a student is following a patient already (ie. ICU patient), they may go to the OR.
8. The list of out patients for elective cases is maintained by the Surgery
Seniors and ultimate responsibly for maintenance and organization of that
list falls to the Surgical PGY-5.
9. If the Attending on call on Thursday is not at Pre-Op Conference it is
the responsibility of the Surgical Senior on call that Thursday to contact
the Attending and discuss the cases with them. This also applies to any
changes to the OR schedule.
10. It is the ultimate responsibility of the Surgical PGY-5 to ensure that
the elective OR day runs smoothly i.e. pro-actively communicating with the
other Surgery Seniors and Juniors to make sure the operative plan is well
thought out and the patients are prepared.
