Highlights from EAST - DVT prophylaxis and intracranial hemorrhage

In CHEMICAL VENOUS THROMBOEMBOLIC PROPHYLAXIS IS SAFE AND EFFECTIVE IN PATIENTS WITH TRAUMATIC INTRACRANIAL HEMORRHAGE WHEN STARTED 24 HOURS AFTER ABSENCE OF PROGRESSION OF HEMORRHAGE ON BRAIN CT,
Yamaan Saadeh from Michigan State University studied 205 patienys with intracranial hemorrhage on CT. If the hemorrhage was shown to be stable after 36-48 hours, patients were started on chemical VTE prophylaxis.
They concluded that a protocol based on early use of chemical VTE prophylaxis after absence of progression of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage does not result in increased progression of intracranial hemorrhage and reduced the rate of VTE.
