We recently celebrated our Golden Anniversary with a gala event.
Dr. Kimberly Nagy (aka "matriarch of trauma") was the Mistress of Ceremonies.
We were welcomed by the CEO and CMO of the Health Systems - Dr. Jay Shannon and Dr. Claudia Fegan.
After dinner, Dr. Nagy read some reminiscences from Unit Founder Dr. Robert Baker and Illinois Trauma Systems Founder Dr. David Boyd. Neither was able to attend due to family commitments.
The
past two Trauma Directors, Dr. John Barrett and Dr. Rocky Roberts told of the advances during their tenures.
The current Trauma Director, Dr. Faran Bokhari gave his vision for the future.
The best part of the evening was seeing old friends and colleagues. Many people compared it to a High School Reunion. There were attendings and nurses from 30+ years ago enjoying the festivities with medical students and residents on service now.
It was truly a remarkable evening to honor the oldest Trauma Unit in the country.
If you want to view the slide show that was playing during the evening, it is at:

I am truly sorry that I could not attend the 50th Anniversary of the WFTU! I invented that slogan during the the March blahs that occurred on the TC during the slow operative months of February-March each year. The CCH TU "firsts" are too many to list. Certainly, the Trauma Registry was needed because of the many lost and crummy hospital records at the time.
ReplyDeleteWhen we wrote the Statewide Plan for TC's and EMS Systems, Bruce Flasher, Bob Lowe and Teri Romano copied what we knew from our experiences at the "County".
It always gave me great pleasure as the National Trauma/EMSS Director, when I would tell the sophisticated and well-healed hospitals around the country that they would need to model themselves after the WFTU in the huge public hospital in downtown Chicago if they wanted to become a "real" trauma center !
I will not miss the next CCH TU get together, DR Boyd
