Our hospital policy states that 3 or more "red" (ie unstable) patients from one scene constitutes a Stage 3 (highest) external disaster. For anyone who has been here on a weekend night in the summer, this is essentially business as usual. In any case, today we participated in a city-wide external disaster drill.
Our team has just received word that we are getting at least 12 victims from a plane crash. Reactions range from the confidence of a senior, to panic from our intern.
As the patients arrived, they were triaged into different areas of our Resusc room. Those who needed emergent airways were quickly intubated by our emergency medicine residents.
Having recovered from his initial panic, our intern cared for one of the victims who moments before had been hysterically screaming.
One senior resident calmly cared for the patients in her station while preparing to take one to the operating room.
After the "all clear", our victims posed for pictures. We are grateful to the sailors from Great Lakes Naval Base for assisting with this disaster drill.
